TEACHING PARENTS ABOUT AUTISM and SPECIAL EDUCATION
I am here to show you who I am and why I teach parents about autism (and special education)!
My aim is to empower parents with the proper strategies and tools they need to teach and handle their children with special needs.
Hello!
I'm thrilled to introduce myself as a sixth-grade middle school teacher, specializing in Special Day Class (SDC) in California, USA. While this is my first year teaching in this particular role, I bring over 14 years of experience as an educator to the classroom.
My passion for teaching and dedication to creating inclusive learning environments have guided me throughout my career.
My passion is not only limited to sharing my expertise and helping students grow, but also extending my support to all the parents who are willing to learn from me!
Quennie Telen Lim
Special Education Teacher
I founded Teaching Parents About Autism (TPA) and Special Education (SPED) as a vehicle to teach struggling parents through online coaching using proper strategies and tools for autism and other special needs cases.
I gained my Master of Arts in Education (major in Special Education) from the University of the Philippines Graduate School of Education. I have a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Colegio de San Juan de Letran. Currently, I am taking credentialing courses to be able to fully teach in California, USA.
I served as an Early Intervention Teacher for 10 years teaching in an autism school in Singapore handling different autism spectrum disorders, from mild to moderate, moderate to severe autism. I have taught in the Philippines as special education teacher for 3 years prior to teaching in Singapore.
I gained numerous trainings and certifications in autism such as Higher Certificate in Autism (HCIA), Certificate in Autism (CIA), Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), Personal Resilience Training, Language Development in Early Childhood, Preparatory Program, and many more.
As a PRC (Professional Regulation Commission) licensed teacher in the Philippines, I am currently training special education teachers in the Philippines, giving consultations as well as supervising educational programs online in a special school in the Philippines, as well as conducting workshops online for parents in the Philippines.
Why do I still teach Special Education in the classroom environment?
Special education often requires thinking outside the box and finding creative solutions to meet students' diverse needs. This fosters a culture of innovation and encourages teachers to constantly adapt and refine their approaches. And that is me!
I constantly innovate, encourage creativity, and improve my teaching strategies to help my students grow. I would like to make an impact on their lives and extend this to parents who need my support.
My teaching philosophies are simple:
Why Do I Coach Parents?
This is one of my coaching sessions with one of my parents!
I've heard a lot of stories from parents struggling to manage their children at home. They don't know what to do. They do trial and error and guessing games. In the end, their kids' meltdown. They feel frustrated, stressed, hopeless, and tired. Some give up and some are puzzled.
This is why Teaching Parents Autism (Special Education) was founded.
There are very limited programs focusing on teaching parents how to handle their children with autism and special education at home or in public places.
I am here to teach you what you can do to lessen those tantrums and meltdowns at home, give you the right mindset on how to view autism from a teacher's perspective, and teach you teaching strategies that are evidence-based and effective.
This is why I am here, to reach out to parents who need this kind of support.
benefits of online coaching
Information from the internet can be overwhelming and messy, and may be misleading if you are unaware.
Teaching children with autism requires structure, consistency, and clarity. Such skills cannot be learned by just searching for answers on the internet.
The covid pandemic became an eye-opener to many parents and professionals. Many of the students stay at home most of the time realizing it was totally difficult to handle their children without having extensive knowledge of autism.
Some parents struggle to manage their children and are perplexed about how and what to occupy their children.
Through this internet, we can teach parents how to handle their children at home even if they are in the opposite side of the world.
