5 Activities to Maintain Eye Contact and Increase Attention

Maintaining eye contact is one of the major struggles of children with autism.

But why is eye contact important to children with autism?

Poor eye contact creates barriers that make their communication and social aspects dysfunctional. This problem, if not addressed, will persist for a lifetime.

How do you help your child increase their eye contact? Here are 5 helpful activities to start with:

1. Discover your child’s preferences.

What are his favorite toys?

What are the activities he likes doing?

What are his favorite foods?

These preferences can be useful tools to create a platform of activities for building eye contact.

Building eye contact using your child's favorite materials is not fancy and difficult task.

This can be done on a daily basis!

2. Peek-a-boo.

It may be an old-school technique but a very useful and fun activity to create a connection with your child!

Using your child’s favorite toy will surely keep his attention and engagement in the activity!

Be creative! You can use cloth to cover your face, hide behind a pillow, cupboard, or his favorite book!

Have fun and enjoy it with your child.

3. Fun in the dark.

Trying out new adventures with your child promotes different learning opportunities like this activity.

You may decorate his room with a rotating projector lamp or curtain lights to relax his senses and pin his attention.

Another creative experience is to use a flashlight in a dark room.

Let your child catch the dancing light you create!

4. Follow moving objects.

This activity can be performed using colorful or squishy toys.

Let your child follow the objects from left to right, up and down, and or in circular directions.

You may also blow bubbles and ask your child to follow the bubbles and pop them.

5. Seeing through.

It’s time to bring out your creativity as a parent.

You may use a clothesline and hang all your child’s favorite toys or any colorful objects.

Let your child see these objects through binoculars.

Or you may want to use a kaleidoscope to stir his imagination.

These activities will be a lot of fun if you do them through role-play like a pirates game or treasure hunt.

I bet you like those activities, aren't you?
